From Buckingham Palace
to the Australian Outback

(and how I sacked the Queen)

• This is me in my past life as a Metropolitan Police officer in London.

It was November 2007 when I walked into my boss’s office, handed in my resignation and walked out the door.

The relief I felt was beyond words. Like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

For 12 years I had been a Metropolitan Police officer in London, the last six of which I spent working for the Royal family at Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace was a sought-after position and I felt very privileged to be accepted. But I must admit I hadn’t applied for the job through any sense of allegiance or Royal obligation. I was simply short of cash. Overtime was compulsory at the Palace and there was a lot of it.

To me the extra cash meant freedom. Freedom to travel and visit family and friends who I hadn’t seen in a long time.

The Palace was an interesting place to work and there were some great perks such as working in Balmoral in the highlands of Scotland and being invited to Garden parties and Christmas Balls. We were also allowed to use the Royal box for concerts at The Royal Albert Hall.

What a great way to impress your family! I met some very interesting and quite iconic people and I would never swap the experience as it has given me some amazing memories to look back on.

The years flew by really quickly. Too quickly. Before I knew it, I’d been there over four years. The Royal household is run on precision timing and everyone knows where they will be on any day in a given month. Annual leave had to be booked a year in advance. I was starting to feel like I was constantly at work.

One summer day, having completed a 70 hour week, I was really looking forward to my four days off. I was traveling home to Liverpool to see my family. It was my little sister’s birthday, and I hadn’t seen my dad for a year so he had organized a family barbecue. I grabbed my bag and train tickets and was heading out the door when I heard the phone ring. Thinking it was my sister I ran in and answered it to wish her happy birthday. I was surprised to hear my sergeant’s voice instead. “Cat, I’m glad I caught you. Sorry, your rest days are cancelled. You’ll have to come in. On the up side it’s worth another £1500 in your pay packet.” He said it as though he was doing me a favour. I didn’t want the money. I wanted to be at home with my family.

• I enjoyed a stopover in Sydney on the way.

I had no choice. I was working for a disciplined service and I had just been ordered to come into work by a senior officer. I tried to explain to my sister but it fell on deaf ears. As far as she was concerned, her birthday wasn’t important enough for me to take a day off. I felt totally miserable.

A feeling of discontent started to creep in. At first I couldn’t put my finger on it. I was earning great money and I had a fantastic job, so why wasn’t I jumping out of bed with enthusiasm for another 12 hour shift?

One morning when the alarm went off, I knew I couldn’t face it. I sat on the edge of the bed staring at the clock. I realised I had been awake for most of the night dreading the alarm. I was starting to feel burned out.

By January the following year, my sister had finally forgiven me so I received an invite for her wedding to be held in the August. I was so excited and applied for two days annual leave straight away. Less than a week later, my application was back in my pigeon hole with the words “Denied.” stamped across the front and a small explanation. “Her Majesty will be at Balmoral. And you will be required to stay one extra week”.

• The mandatory Sydney Harbour Bridge shot :-) .

I went cap in hand to see my Sergeant and practically begged him for the time off. I could see he sympathized but his hands were tied. He said, “Sorry Cat, the box is empty.” That’s a phrase police officers use to denote the fact that we’ve run out of police officers. We can’t just open up another box of shiny new probationers. You’re it, there is no-one else to call on. I knew I wasn’t getting that time off. What was I going to say to my sister? She would never understand.

I was right, she didn’t understand. Why couldn’t I fly down from Scotland for one day? I explained that my annual leave revolved around what the Queen was doing that week. As I said those words, I realized how ridiculous it sounded and I was suddenly reminded of all the family functions that I had missed over those years. Christenings, birthdays, Easter, summer barbecues. I was the one that was never there. I was forever letting everyone down.

• I walked an Inca trail at Machu Picchu in Peru as part of a fundraiser for the Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital.

My sister changed the dates of the wedding so that I could be there and that meant so much to me. I decided things had to change. I was trapped. The job owned me. I felt like I was strapped into a roller coaster and couldn’t get off. Money means nothing if you don’t have people to share it with and I was now seeing less of family and friends than before I had joined the department.

Not only was I re-thinking my position within the Royalty Protection department, I was also re-thinking my career within the Metropolitan Police.

My sister told me she was moving to Australia with her family and I decided I was going too. I took a massive leap of faith, took a few deep breaths, walked into my Superintendents office and handed in my resignation. I was petrified. I left his office with a certificate of “Meritorious Service” and a lump in my throat (I had to look up “Meritorious”).

Now I’m working in a gold mining town in the outback of Australia and I wouldn’t swap this experience either. I have met some amazing people. What a contrast to working at Buckingham Palace. I have committed to a two year contract here while I write about my experiences and then I intend to chose my own hours and my own level of income. That is freedom.

Moving from a lucrative and secure job to another continent had been a major leap, but I felt that there was more out there for me. Having had the experience where I traded time for money, at the expense of my relationships with the people I loved, I knew that I wanted a greater level of freedom.

I wanted to choose when and where I worked. I wanted to answer to no-one. I wanted to increase my value and be rewarded financially, accordingly.

I decided that I wanted to start my own business. I went online to find a business opportunity that would potentially give me the things I was looking for: money, freedom and the opportunity to work with other motivated, ambitious people like me.
Then one day, not long ago, I ran across an ad on the Internet. It told of a turnkey online marketing system that you could tap into, and with learning and dedication, build a lucrative business.

All you had to do was follow the step-by-step program that a community of Internet millionaires had put together and you could achieve success just like them.

As you can imagine, it caught my attention. I did my due diligence and what I found was a group of people that were incredibly honest, forthright and with integrity beyond my expectations. The like-minded people I had been looking for to work with.

These extremely successful people who are at the cutting edge of online marketing techniques and technology are teaching me the secrets to their business success. They are teaching me how to harness the power of the Internet. They are showing me the beauty of true leverage in a system that sifts and sorts prospects for you 24/7. It enables you to speak with serious business people only.

I am learning how to market my business online, and use the types of marketing strategies like PPC, Web 2.0 and Social Media, which most business people have never even heard of.

Now I feel very excited about my future, as the more I learn, the better positioned I am to build a lucrative international business on my own terms.

But don’t just take my word for it. If you are seriously contemplating your own business, take your time and do your due diligence. There are a lot of opportunities, great products and high quality mentors out there. But for what it is worth, my experience has taught me that it is important to spend your time doing the things that you enjoy, and that are important to you.
If you take a look at this business and decide it fits the bill, I’ll be speaking with you soon.

Respectfully,
